Anne Lachance: Oh, the places she will go!
Kaiser Lachance Communications
Mar 13, 2020
The last few weeks have been bittersweet as we prepare to say au revoir to our managing partner and president, Anne Lachance, who is leaving KLC on March 13 in search of new adventures.
While sad to see her leave, we are also excited to see what’s next in her career, which certainly has been exceptional to date!
Before throwing a little party for her (shhh!!!), we asked her a few questions about how she got started, what inspired her and David to build our firm, and what her plans are for the future.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a vet. That didn’t work out so well because I was allergic to just about every animal on the planet at the time… So, I had to take a different direction, and here I am!
When and how did you start in communications?
I started my communications career in Investor Relations, two weeks before Black Monday, in October 1987. After jumping around for a couple of years (vet pharmaceutical, medical equipment, fashion apparel, financial services), I stumbled onto an investor relations job posting and went for it. The rest is history.
We know you are about to start your third career. What was your first?
I was a nurse for five years — a profession I found both extremely rewarding and tough (as hell).
Why do you think “it’s time”?
When David and I started KLC almost nine years ago, we wanted to do things differently. And I think we did that. We go above and beyond for clients; provide opportunities for people to challenge themselves and try new things; in what is, and I know will remain, a fun place to come to work. I am very proud of what we have accomplished and the talented team we have built.
This has been a great ride so far. I’m not built for a slow speed, so I’m keen to see where the next adventure takes me.
What do you feel most proud of from your time at KLC?
We started KLC from our respective dining room tables and kitchen counters and now KLC is one of the most respected communications firms in the country – and that’s something not too many people get to brag about… pretty freakin’ awesome!
What are the lessons learned from your career to date?
1) It takes a village! Hire the best people. They will make you great.
2) Teamwork is everything no matter where you are or what you do.
3) You absolutely can’t go wrong with an all-black wardrobe (and great shoes) (extra points for sparkly).
What do you wish you had known before you started your career in communications?
I should not admit this, but I don’t love writing… One of my first bosses told me I couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag. The first time I was published, I put the article in (you guessed it) a paper bag on his desk!
What would you have done differently?
We should have started KLC much earlier. I would now have more time for my third career… I’m not getting any younger.
Have you ever stolen anything from the office?
What was it?
Is it really stealing if you are taking something from your own company?
What was your best day at KLC like?
If I could choose two best days, they would be the first and the last. On both days, I have been stressed and excited for what’s ahead and proud of everything in between.
So, what’s next?
Sleep for a few weeks
Not get up at 6:30 am
Not do time entry
Hit the gym everyday (OK, this one may be a lie)
See what’s out there for my third career.
Will miss you. Stay tuned!
We can’t let Anne go without thanking her for her vision, leadership and for truly making KLC an amazing place to work.
